  <title>KDE 4.3</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/8150.html</link>
<description>So I&apos;m back. I&apos;ve returned from the almost dead (after a peritonitis which almost killed me) and now I&apos;m trying KDE 4.3 from updates-testing repo in Fedora 11. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&apos;m speechless. Last time I tryed KDE was when it was on version 3.5.X and i didn&apos;t really liked it at all. I found it messy and i couldn&apos;t found my way on that desktop environment, so i stick to Gnome as it was more intuitive for me. Now after lots of improvements I have to say KDE 4 rocks!. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even though I&apos;m using testing-repo to fetch KDE 4.3 packages I found my desktop to be rock solid. No critical bugs and no annoying missconfigurations. The interface is awesome and the plasma widgets makes the desktop way more appealing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So far I feel like home using KDE 4.3, and im only hoping to get multimedia keys work out of the box and to replace NetworkManager-gnome with a working version of plasma-NetworkManager.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BTW, congratulations to fedora&apos;s KDE SIG for their great job on getting KDE to Fedora. Keept up the good job guys!!.</description>

<title>Some more changes to the website</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/7682.html</link>
<description>There has been a lot of movement in the Fedora Websites team lately. Some new proposals for a &lt;a href=&quot;http://craigt.fedorapeople.org/planet/planet.html&quot;&gt;new design for the planet&lt;/a&gt; has been posted on the mailing list and they have been brought to the meeting getting a lot of attention and feedback (great work Craig).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once again its time to show some changes to the Fedora&apos;s main site (http://fedoraproject.org) that I&apos;ve proposed and that are also a subject that still need some discussion before it gets mature enough to be a real change for the site. This time the changes focused more on the first page of the site in which are shown some options to download Fedora Desktop Live image either by Torrent or in a direct download method (HTTP). The idea was to promote only one single media that will hopefully fulfil all the user&apos;s need, so that is why the Desktop Live Media is the one proposed. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://jprada.fedorapeople.org/out/en/&quot;&gt;&lt;img width=&quot;365&quot; height=&quot;249&quot; align=&quot;absmiddle&quot; alt=&quot;fp.o proposal&quot; src=&quot;http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3038/2568471908_0e9a271c37_o.png&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is also a news and Spins column that I&apos;m sure need a lot more work (and probably some RSS feeds to make the news more content rich).&amp;nbsp; Also the Get-Fedora section was changed to provide a more intuitive way for new users to download Fedora. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://jprada.fedorapeople.org/out/en/get-fedora&quot;&gt;&lt;img alt=&quot;&quot; style=&quot;width: 374px; height: 308px;&quot; src=&quot;http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3192/2567648835_dcfc6a3cb6.jpg?v=0&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you followed the last month discussions about get-fedora in the mailing list you will probably notice this proposal is fairly equal to the one proposed back then. The changes were made in the JavaScript and now no more fancy animations are there (i didnt like them that much). Also there is only options to the official Fedora installation media and all spins will be their own space (which will be spins.fedoraproject.org).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know it still need some work specially to provide a more efficient-not-so-user-friendly way for all hackers/experts who just want a one click method to download any media they want (i have already seen people complaining about too many clicks to download the media eventhough its only 3 clicks which imho isnt that much)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, these are my proposals and as i said they need some work so i would like you people to give some feedback, propose new things, correct when you see fit, and cricise if thats the case so all the people involved with the Fedora Websites Team an I can work on this feature that may lead us to have a so much better website&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Current working site is available at &lt;a href=&quot;http://jprada.fedorapeople.org/out/en&quot;&gt;http://jprada.fedorapeople.org/out/en&lt;/a&gt;</description>

  <title>Zombies Meme</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/7639.html</link>
<description>yeah.. i couldn&apos;t resist :)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You are in a mall when zombies attack. You have:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 1. One weapon&lt;br /&gt; 2. One song blasting on the speakers&lt;br /&gt; 3. One famous person to fight along side you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;hr /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. As right now I&apos;m into &lt;a href=&quot;http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenpo&quot;&gt;Martial Arts&lt;/a&gt; I would go for my bare hands!... (taste the fury of my fists you rotten corpses)&lt;br /&gt;2. The Final Sacrifice from &lt;a href=&quot;http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avantasia&quot;&gt;Avantasia&lt;/a&gt;. We all know I wont survive without a real weapon :P &lt;br /&gt;3. I would choose a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.elderscrolls.com/codex/races_breton.htm&quot;&gt;Breton&lt;/a&gt;, their magic ability to control summoned beasts and their skills in white magic are certainly a help</description>

  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/7261.html</link>
<description>So I&apos;m in quest for an internship. I would really like to get something related to what I actually do which is web development or linux in general. I&apos;m a serious guy, I learn fast and I&apos;m always willing to accept challenges. so, if any of you know of any available internship please let me know, it would be very appreciated :)</description>

I accept the fact the you dont like Linux at all, but before starting to criticize and say all that shit about linux, try it!!!. Im sure even a retarded user like you will probably find something good in using linux. And btw, why on earth would somebody &lt;a href=&quot;http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2008/05/avoid-drm-by-using-free-software-to.html&quot;&gt;like DRM&lt;/a&gt; over a free linux distro?. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do yourself a favour and jump from the higher building in your town.</description>

  <title>I&apos;m still here</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/6786.html</link>
<description>This is just a test to see if my .planet file is really working... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And also a chance for me to say how disappointed I am right now. I was suppose to travel yesterday to Bogota (Colombia&apos;s capital city) due to Campus Party, which is scheduled for June 23th (I know its still early but I wanted to have a chance to spend some time at Bogota visiting some old friends, and presenting my CV to some companies there to have a chance to do an internship the next semester). But then something here about my thesis appeared to ruin my travel plans and so I had to stay and fix all those issues in the document.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One good thing though is that my university is writing an small article about Fedora 9&apos;s release and my involvement with the project so I&apos;m gonna take this chance to encourage everybody at the university to join the project, now that&apos;s easier than ever :)</description>

<description>Yes, it&apos;s finally done, I had my thesis presentation today about a methodology to select efficient web frameworks based on current PHP application frameworks, and everything went quite well!. Not only my thesis got an honorific status given by my university, but I also got the chance to explain it in a Free Software class from a Master program, which seem to be a quite exciting idea.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lets see how all this class thing ends up...</description>

  <title>Good things happening this week</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/6127.html</link>
<description>I&apos;m really excited about all the things that have been done this last week. And specially I&apos;m really happy that I&apos;ve been part of all that. Things are getting better for everyone and although there is still a lot to do in order to get things perfect, the facts of this week proves that progress is in motion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since I joined Fedora project and the Websites SIG, I noticed a lack of interest in the community for working on the main site, fedoraproject.org (yes, i know, you got your jobs, you got your personal projects, people contribute all they can, but still). I&apos;ve been working as a freelancer web developer for a couple of years now and, even though I don&apos;t consider myself an expert (I&apos;m really far from being one), my experience let me understand that websites that are not updated and that lack of some sex-appeal (come on.. i know there must be a website you really like and consider to be the best one on internet) are bound to fail and sooner or later (probably sooner than later), all users will stop visiting the site. So all this time as a community member i&apos;ve kept saying that something should be done in order to prevent that to happen to fedoraproject.org.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thanks to&amp;nbsp;&lt;span class=&apos;ljuser ljuser-name_spevack&apos; lj:user=&apos;spevack&apos; style=&apos;white-space: nowrap;&apos;&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://spevack.livejournal.com/profile&apos;&gt;&lt;img src=&apos;http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif&apos; alt=&apos;[info]&apos; width=&apos;17&apos; height=&apos;17&apos; style=&apos;vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;&apos; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://spevack.livejournal.com/&apos;&gt;&lt;b&gt;spevack&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;, &lt;span class=&apos;ljuser ljuser-name_mmcgrath&apos; lj:user=&apos;mmcgrath&apos; style=&apos;white-space: nowrap;&apos;&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://mmcgrath.livejournal.com/profile&apos;&gt;&lt;img src=&apos;http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif&apos; alt=&apos;[info]&apos; width=&apos;17&apos; height=&apos;17&apos; style=&apos;vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;&apos; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://mmcgrath.livejournal.com/&apos;&gt;&lt;b&gt;mmcgrath&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;ricky, Craig, and some other guys from the project (sorry if I don&apos;t mention you, I&apos;m just not that good when it comes to remembering names), last Wednesday I attended at my first Websites meeting. Along with all these people we managed to settle some things. Although there are a lot more things that still need to be discussed, we definitely set some very important points on how the the team should work from now on, which is a great thing considering how things where done in the Websites SIG.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, people in the marketing list have seen some comments about new vision and new design ideas for the current fedoraproject.org site (Thanks craig, ricky, &lt;span class=&apos;ljuser ljuser-name_rahulsundaram&apos; lj:user=&apos;rahulsundaram&apos; style=&apos;white-space: nowrap;&apos;&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://rahulsundaram.livejournal.com/profile&apos;&gt;&lt;img src=&apos;http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif&apos; alt=&apos;[info]&apos; width=&apos;17&apos; height=&apos;17&apos; style=&apos;vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;&apos; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://rahulsundaram.livejournal.com/&apos;&gt;&lt;b&gt;rahulsundaram&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp;for all your help on this), and all those comments are helping to build the idea of what the website should be. That is somehow the result of the meeting, and so far i can say things are progressing in a very interesting way. More and more people is getting involved with this &apos;Websites SIG rebirth&apos; process,&amp;nbsp; and I&apos;m surprised that since last Wednesday everytime i check my email i get some really good comments/suggestions on this, which makes me think the interest on the website is rising again. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ath the end all i have to say is thanks to all the community involved in this, and lets give some love to the website as its the one that is representing the project on the internet so we should make it look good!.</description>

  <title>Fedora 9 Beta is out!!</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/5817.html</link>
<description>Good news the one I received once i logged in my &lt;a href=&quot;http://mugshot.org/visit?post=JndSjCDDTj9qsX&quot;&gt;mugshot &lt;/a&gt;account!. Fedora 9 Beta is already available to &lt;font size=&quot;3&quot;&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease&quot;&gt;download&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt; and of course I&apos;m already int it!.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Im so excited about this release!, as i have had some troubles with fedora 8 and my laptop (nothing to worry about but still annoying bugs) and it seems fedora 9 fixes all those issues. Besides all &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org/en/f9-beta-relnotes&quot;&gt;new stuff included&lt;/a&gt; in beta release are worth to try!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a few hours ill post my impressions about this release!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE:&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately i couldnt get the liveCD to work. It booted but when reaching GDM i get only a white square in the middle of the screen with no text or images. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I managed to log in with GDM only to find that gnome panels look exactly the same. Two white panels with no text, icons or applets. What is funny is that it seems to recognize that there are items to be selected an used, i could click on what was suppose to be the menu but so the menu was all white too.&amp;nbsp; I didnt get icons on my desktop either, so now im running in a virtual machine to see if things work now (apparently they do).</description>

<title>No sound again = starting to hate kernel updates</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/5520.html</link>
<description>&amp;nbsp; So there was a kernel update in fedora 8. New kernel 2.6.24 left me again without sound. I experienced that problem in my laptop when i first get a kernel update after a fresh installation. Although until now I&apos;ve been able to fix the problem, by installing alsa-kmdl and alsa-driver packages from ATRPMs, this time there are no alsa packages for the new kernel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So have three options to choose from:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;I can just wait an be patient until someone fix the problem (not&amp;nbsp; a good choice as I&apos;ve used kernel 2.6.23.15-137 since its release and ther was no fix this problem on the new kernel)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Again wait until someone package alsa-kmdl and alsa-driver &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Compiling the alsa driver from source.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;Im really impatient so the first two options are most likely to be chosen only if the third one might not be picked at all&lt;br /&gt;Now that leaves me with option 3. Compiling the alsa driver from source. If choosing it, it would be the my first time compiling an application that seems to be so important. (i usually compile small not so fancy programs). The question is:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Will i have any problem if using source to install alsa drivers?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Answers to this issue would be really appreciated :)</description>

  <title>Dell Technical Support</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/5275.html</link>
<description>&lt;p&gt;Its been a while since i dont post here, and last time i did, was anouncing my acquisition of a Dell Inspiron 1420. I wrote the post using Windows Vista, as i didnt have the chance of using any GNU/Linux dstro. Today, I&apos;m writing again from Vista, not because I liked this operating system (actually i kinda hate it). The reason is because i needed to have some technical support from Dell, and they can only assure me a good suport if using the operating system of their choice (Vista).&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wouldnt have bothered them if it wasnt due to a hardware problem. Aparently my integrated webcam is broken, so thanks to the warranty im gonna get a new one, but for the Dell guy to be sure things work, i have to use Vista.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have to say&amp;nbsp; that I felt very well receiving Dell&apos;s support. The service is very good. Although i&apos;d like it to be more wide in terms of software. Having to install Vista to get their support is not something im willing to do very often.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, tomorrow I&apos;ll get my new webcam, so probably in two more days i&apos;ll be back to linux :D&lt;/p&gt;</description>

<description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;font face=&quot;Times New Roman&quot; size=&quot;3&quot;&gt;Yeap, i got my new laptop, its a Dell Inspiron 1420, quite popular here. Unfortunately for me, it came with Vista pre-installed. And right now i dont have any liveCD or installation DVD available, so im writing this from Vista, but as soon as i get home, I&apos;ll use my so beloved iso DVD of fedora 8 to get my laptop fully functionall.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BTW, i must admit, that Vista has a really nice design (before i start a falamming war here, i know i can do better things using fedora, so dont worry, im not betraying you guys ^^ )&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

  <title>Improved Layout for fedoraproject.org</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/4805.html</link>
<description>Thanks to &lt;span class=&apos;ljuser ljuser-name_mihmo&apos; lj:user=&apos;mihmo&apos; style=&apos;white-space: nowrap;&apos;&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://mihmo.livejournal.com/profile&apos;&gt;&lt;img src=&apos;http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif&apos; alt=&apos;[info]&apos; width=&apos;17&apos; height=&apos;17&apos; style=&apos;vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;&apos; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://mihmo.livejournal.com/&apos;&gt;&lt;b&gt;mihmo&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp; for her Fedora Spins mock ups. I downloaded the SVG from &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites/Spins&quot;&gt;here&lt;/a&gt; and played with them for a while. &lt;br style=&quot;font-size: 16.1px;&quot; /&gt;As one of the ideas with all this fedora websites thing is to unify the look and feel of all them, I though it would be a good idea to use Máirín&apos;s design as the base layout for the websites, so i made some changes here and there and this is what i got:&lt;br style=&quot;font-size: 16.1px;&quot; /&gt;&lt;br style=&quot;font-size: 16.1px;&quot; /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2357/2251189805_ae158b7fd0_o.png&quot;&gt;&lt;img alt=&quot;&quot; src=&quot;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2357/2251189805_9d574e9650.jpg?v=0&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end it doesn look so different from the current design, And it adds a lot of new information to the main site.&lt;br /&gt;The content in the center will have a relative width so it might look better in a high resolution.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Again thanks to Máirín for her help, and i hope she likes what i did with her designs :)</description>

  <title>Improvements to fedoraproject.org</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/4539.html</link>
  <description>In &lt;a href=&quot;http://juankprada.livejournal.com/4057.html&quot;&gt;this&lt;/a&gt; post i mentioned a few things about the lack of information in &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org&quot;&gt;fedoraproject.org.&lt;/a&gt; And after a couple of e-mails in the marketing list, and some hours learning a bit of python (thanks to &lt;span class=&apos;ljuser ljuser-name_ivazquez&apos; lj:user=&apos;ivazquez&apos; style=&apos;white-space: nowrap;&apos;&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://ivazquez.livejournal.com/profile&apos;&gt;&lt;img src=&apos;http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif&apos; alt=&apos;[info]&apos; width=&apos;17&apos; height=&apos;17&apos; style=&apos;vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;&apos; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href=&apos;http://ivazquez.livejournal.com/&apos;&gt;&lt;b&gt;ivazquez&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp; , and ricky in #fedora-website for their help) i managed to get this script working. Is not because i did it, but i think it works quite well. It parses the entries from a list of feeds, and then organize the entries by the latest parsed date. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Probably it might need some improvements as this is my firs python script ever. So im posting the code here so anyone can provide feedback&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;def reader():&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; news_limit = 5 # set this number for the maximum number of entries displayed&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; # Add feeds to this list to be published on the site&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; url = [&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; (&quot;http://fedora-tchung.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default&quot;),&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; (&quot;http://www.redhatmagazine.com/category/fedora/feed&quot;),&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; ]&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; feeds = []&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; for urls in url:&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; fwn_feed = feedparser.parse(urls)&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; feeds.append(fwn_feed)&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; entries = []&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; for feed in feeds:&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; entries.extend(feed[&quot;items&quot;])&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; decorated = [(entry[&quot;date_parsed&quot;], entry) for entry in entries]&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; decorated.sort()&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; decorated.reverse() #for most recent entries first&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; sorted = [entry for (date,entry) in decorated]&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; latest_news = []&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; for&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; items in sorted[:news_limit]:&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; latest_news.append(items)&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; return latest_news&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img border=&quot;1&quot; alt=&quot;preview&quot; src=&quot;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2306/2250845737_122c2db65c.jpg?v=0&quot; /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is the screenshoot of the website using the script. I hope everybody likes it, and so please comment on it. Also it could have some work in the design as it doesnt look that good when the entries titles length surpasses&amp;nbsp; the actual width of the div.</description>

  <title>A day full of surprises!</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/4253.html</link>
<description>It sure has been a day full of surprises. First of all Fedora 9 (sulphur) Alpha was released today, and I&apos;m already downloading it, I really want to test all the new things it has. So far I feel like a little kid with his new toy (in 3 or more hours I&apos;ll tell you more about this release). Congratulations to all the people who worked on this release!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another surprise was the announce that some of the teachers and directives from the Systems Engineering School at my university did today. Apparently a Linux User Group, is gonna be created as part of the plan to spread the FOSS at the university campus, and somehow they think I could be a good leader for that group. I don&apos;t consider myself an expert in the FOSS field, but who am i to question their decisions?. Anyway, if I&apos;m elected I promise I&apos;ll work as hard as I can for this LUG in the name of all FOSS enthusiast!.</description>

<title>Is this part of the fedora project?</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/4057.html</link>
<description>Until now I&apos;ve avoid thinking about this, but today i woke up with this little, yet useful (sometimes) &apos;criticism&apos; attitude. So yes, I&apos;m gonna criticize some things about current fedora&apos;s related websites. I&apos;m gonna name some of the most common sites a normal user would visit on their first days of using fedora (and he would do so as they are bookmarks in the web browser). We have &lt;a href=&quot;http://planet.fedoraproject.org/&quot;&gt;planet fedora&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org/wiki&quot;&gt;fedora wiki&lt;/a&gt;, and the main &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org&quot;&gt;fedoraproject.org&lt;/a&gt; website. And, despite all of them are official websites for the project, they don&apos;t maintain a unified felling. This is talking about design. Although all of them use the official color palette the design is quite different one from the other. I&apos;m not an expert on UI design, but the first time i had to deal with the wiki i got overwhelmed by its current interface, it was hard to know how to look for things on the wiki, how it was organized and so i really had to work myself out of that situation in order to find what i was looking for. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, lets talk a bit more about the design and the integration of all web sites in fedora project. If you take a look at &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org&quot;&gt;fedoraproject.org&lt;/a&gt; you&apos;ll find a really nice interface, with a nice navigation bar (although quite small and thats another point to discuss here). Once you click on the &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org/wiki&quot;&gt;Wiki link&lt;/a&gt; on the navigation bar, you&apos;ll find yourself dealing with a completely different interface, which makes me (and probably some others user too) think that the project is not unified and that each website is made by different teams who doesn&apos;t even communicate to each other to coordinate the look and feel of the project (this is less visible while navigation between the wiki and the planet).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the other side, we have http://fedoraproject.org, which is the main site for the project. if that&apos;s so, how is that there is so much lack of information about the project on that site?. I know there is a weekly news on fedora wiki, but news, and project overview should be included in the main site, as that is the site that&apos;s gonna represent the whole project in the web. If you find yourself searching for some information in the main website (something an old fedora user probably won&apos;t do as he knows he wont find info on that site), you&apos;ll find that there is no information about the project in there, so he will have to go look on some other site (probably the wiki) to satisfy his need for information about the project. What I&apos;m trying to say here is that , the fedora project&apos;s main site is not being seized, as there is so much potential in the main site to show information and let the user know about what&apos;s happening with the project. So i&apos;m starting to think that we are forgetting that the web has change and so web apps have to do so in order to keep up with the current paradigms. Users don&apos;t want to dig so deep in a website to find what they are looking for, so something should be done with the main site. Adding a panel with news about the project, would be a good idea.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Probably the fedora websites initiative is already working on all these, and if that is the case, then I apologize (i was looking for that info on the &lt;a href=&quot;http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites&quot;&gt;wiki&lt;/a&gt; and i couldn&apos;t find anything related). At the end this is just a suggestion, and I&apos;m willing to work on it when i have the chance, as right now am working and studying i wont be much help. By the time being, i would like to know if something like this is being considered.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;</description>

  <title>Fedora Operating System</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/3613.html</link>
<description>So i found &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.cosaslibres.com/&quot;&gt;this site&lt;/a&gt; yesterday, and despite its lack of design (imo), and the bad structure of the site (it was a real pain to find a place to contact the webmaster), i found it to be a good incentive to spread open source in my country. And so I started to check what they provide, and i found that fedora is still being named as fedora core....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was wondering if these guys never heard of the merge of core and extras repositories, and if they did, why are they still naming the operating system as fedora core?... i think that when fedora 7 was released they made it very clear that it&apos;s name was fedora and not fedora core, so im starting to think this is a marketing issue as the product is not being promoted by its real name.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another disturbing thing is that the guys from &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.cosaslibres.com/&quot;&gt;www.cosaslibres.com&lt;/a&gt; are telling people that fedora is the successor of Red Hat Linux, and thats how they are promoting fedora, which happens to be a lie in terms that Red Hat still has its own operating system and it hasn&apos;t end it&apos;s production, and fedora is a separate project promoting the use of FOSS which happen to be the base for Red Hat Linux. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;In my opinion this is an information problem and i might have some theories that might explain the reason why this is happening, but thats for another post.</description>

  <title>Local computer store</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/3560.html</link>
<description>I&apos;m in the process of buying a new laptop, so i was checking Dell, Acer and HP web sites (Lenovo is way too expensive for me) in order to find a laptop that suits me and my budget. In the process of searching for a local provider, I get to &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.dyc.com.co/index.php&quot;&gt;this site&lt;/a&gt;, and I was surprised to see that &lt;br /&gt; they only sell computers with Linux pre-installed (still dont know which distro, I&apos;m hoping it&apos;s fedora). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Taking into a count that, this is not a city where something besides Windows or Microsoft is known, finding a store that sells only computers with Linux makes me feel that things are starting to change, and that FOSS is reaching even the smallest places (like my city). That is quite rewarding!.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This afternoon I&apos;ll be heading towards the store to check the laptops as they seem to be pretty new in the industry and yet they don&apos;t have the option to buy on their website (i might find a job oportunity here ^^)</description>

  <title>Hello Planet Fedora</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/3287.html</link>
<description>I know one of my posts already appeared here in the planet!, but i wanted to say hello to everybody and introduce myself!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My name is Juan Camilo Prada, I&apos;m Colombian, and a systems engineer student. I&apos;ve been using fedora since fedora core 5 but my interest in linux started some years before fc5. I&apos;ve used, Debian, Ubuntu and openSUSE, but so far i just feel comfortable using fedora.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My experience as a desktop programmer is not as good as i wish, although I&apos;m getting better everyday, i cant still make a good, usable application. Most of my studies have been focused on web development which is what i do better. I&apos;m currently working on my thesis about open source web application frameworks (Zend Framework, Symfony, CakePHP , etc... ), and I&apos;m using fedora 8 as the server to test all the applications made with the frameworks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also joined fedora ambassadors, and so I&apos;m doing my best to spread fedora philosophy in my city which happens to be a very skeptical city in terms of open source technologies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thats pretty much all I wanted to say!, also well I&apos;m here willing to help, so feel free to mail me or post in my blog to share your opinions.</description>

  <title>Fedora 9 codenames</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/2891.html</link>
<description>I don&apos;t know if I&apos;m mad or disappointed about the names proposed for fedora 9. Many of the names are related to really serious sickness which make me thing, are we trying to make fedora look like a disease?, is that bad fedora that its compared to a disease?. I can&apos;t think of what the people that proposed those names had in their heads at that time, but they cant like fedora (that&apos;s the conclusion i got from that).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the other side, we have names like Chupacabra, which are quite funny but pathetic, and i don&apos;t feel like presenting fedora as a Chupacabra. I just hope this release is so awesome that it can get over the comments that will be generated about the bad codename!</description>

  <title>Fedora Ambassador!</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/2578.html</link>
<description>So finally im really a fedora contributor. I just joined the Fedora Ambassadors project and attended my first meeting at #fedora-meeting (irc).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So far, my duties aren&apos;t as clear as i would like, I&apos;m planning (with some other friends) to make a special event on my University about FOSS in general and so I would be sponsoring Fedora project. The thing is we still need to talk about that with the directives at the university so they will lend us the space. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, I&apos;m happy for being officially accepted in the project.</description>

  <title>Apache + SELinux in fedora 8</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/2473.html</link>
<description>For about three days I&apos;ve been struggling with apache and SELinux, trying to set apache to use &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;/home/user_name/public_html&lt;/font&gt; as a document root for a virtual host. After lots of cups of coffee, long night hours, and some (a lot) help from the guys at #fedora at freenode i managed to get the server up and running along with SELinux in enforcing mode and using my home dir as the document root for my websites. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So for all of you who want to do the same thing, here I&apos;m writing this small &quot;tutorial&quot;, so you don&apos;t have to go visit your psychiatrist after trying to set it up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First of all, This is not an apache tutorial so don&apos;t expect a detailed explanation on how to set a virtual host, the purpose of this tutorial is to show how to set SELinux to let apache use home dirs. I&apos;m going to use my personal home dir as an example, please change the paths to your needs. Also i assume you have a minimal experience using apache and Linux.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, lets say we have set apache to use a virtual host with document root &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;/home/juank/public_html&lt;/font&gt;. In the httpd.conf it should be something like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;&amp;lt;VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:8080&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;DocumentRoot /home/juank/public_html&lt;br /&gt;...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt; &amp;lt;/VirtualHost&amp;gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also we need to comment out the line &lt;tt class=&quot;computeroutput&quot;&gt;UserDir disable&lt;span style=&quot;font-style: italic;&quot;&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/tt&gt;and uncomment &lt;tt class=&quot;computeroutput&quot;&gt;UserDir public_html&lt;/tt&gt; If its not there, then add that line.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As i said before I&apos;m not gonna enter in details about configuring apache.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now if you have your &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;public_html&lt;/font&gt; you should be sure it is accessible by apache so we have to give some permissions to the that folder. We do this with the following command, so open a terminal and write this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;# chmod 755 /home/juank/public_html&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also we need to be sure our personal home directory is accessible and have the right permissions. to do this we use the same command as before, but with different permisions, so it would be like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;# chmod 701 /home/juank&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What we did with the chmod command was to give the owner total access to &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;~/public_html&lt;/font&gt; and the group and others will have only reading rights. Also we set executions permissions to &apos;Other&apos; at /home/juank, but they can&apos;t read nor write files on it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For more information on chmod:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;# man chmod&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now if we create a file to be read by our browser by accessing our virtual host at &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;~/public_html&lt;/font&gt; we will see a forbidden error (a 403 error) and if you have setroubleshoot on installed (which i recommend) a pop-up will show you that apache is being denied the access to home dirs and that you should set the booleans in SELinux to let apache read home directories. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The thing is, if we open &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;system-config-selinux&lt;/font&gt; and search in the boolean window for the home dirs to be accessible &lt;br /&gt;by apache we will notice that it is already enabled. So this is the tricky part! as nobody else (if we ever used SELinux) told us that its not enough to give chmod permissions to our folders when SELinux is activate. We have to set the correct security policy to our folders in order to be used by apache.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if we do &apos;a ls -aZ&apos; to our /home/juank/public_html, we might get something similar to this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;drwxrwxr-x juank juank unconfined_u:object_r:&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: bold;&quot;&gt;unconfined_home_t:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/font&gt;s0 .&lt;br /&gt;drwx------ juank juank unconfined_u:object_r:&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: bold;&quot;&gt;unconfined_home_dir_t:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/font&gt;s0 ..&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That command is showing us the chmod permissions of the folder along with the SELinux policy applied to it, Take a look at the bold text above. That is what we are interested in. Having that policy sets that a process like apache wont be able to access and use its content, so we have to change that policy to something that accept apache.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To do that execute the following command on a terminal:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;span class=&quot;command&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;# chcon -t httpd_sys_content_t /home/juank/public_html&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That command will relabel the &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;~/public_html&lt;/font&gt; directory to something accessible by apache the &apos;-t&apos; option just tells chcon to set the specified Type ( &lt;span class=&quot;command&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;httpd_sys_content_t ) &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/span&gt;in the target, in this case our &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;~/public_html &lt;/font&gt;dir. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For more info abut chcon:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;# man chcon&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, create a file with some content in &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;~/public_html&lt;/font&gt; to be displayed byt the browser :&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style=&quot;margin-left: 40px;&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;# echo &quot; This is a test, if you can see this in your browser then it means the tutorial worked&quot; &amp;gt; /home/juank/public_html/index.html&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then if we open our browser and point it to &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;http://localhost:8080/index.html &lt;/font&gt;the content we added above should be displayed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So this is the end, i hope it work for you. and remember when adding content to the ~/public_html either create the content in that folder or cp instead of mv the content as mv will leave the policy of the file as it is, while cp will change the policy to the one of ~/public_html&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you need more information about setting apache with SELinux i recommend to read the &lt;a href=&quot;http://docs.fedoraproject.org/selinux-apache-fc3/index.html&quot;&gt;official fedora documentation&lt;/a&gt;, though its specified to be for fedora core 3 it works fine with current stable version of fedora.</description>

  <title>Christmas Gift!!</title>
  <link>http://juankprada.livejournal.com/2270.html</link>
<description>So finally Christmas has arrive, and i just gave me a little present. I downloaded and installed openSuse 10.3 on my AMD64 Desktop. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&apos;ve always like the look and feel of openSuse&apos;s gnome configuration, and this wasn&apos;t the exception. I really liked the green background and specially the Gnome-main-menu applet (I still think that fedora needs something like that). But even though i liked it i couldn&apos;t stick to openSuse. Even though its a great distro, I&apos;m not that patient for the usual YAST configuration, its just too slow and time consuming (which remember me the old Windows days). Another thing that really pissed me off was the installation of applications using YAST. Usually when i install apps on my box i don&apos;t stay in front of the screen just gazing at the progress bar showing me how much time&apos;s left to finish with the installation, which aparently, openSuse developers do, as the YAST software management doesn&apos;t let you do another thing while installing software (im talking about the gnome interface, not the KDE one)for it keeps showing me pop ups with the progress bar while looking for repos, and dependency problems, and then the installation. I think that those windows doesnt help a bit to the UI, but that&apos;s just me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway i liked openSuse and i still think its a grate distro which is making things in the right way, but i think ill stick to fedora for another while as it just suits me the way other distros doesn&apos;t. So after 24 hours of testing and checking that everything worked just fine on my recently installed openSuse box, I came back to my ol&apos; fedora 8 distro. So now im posting from the fedora LiveCD as it is installing the OS right now. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&apos;m starting to feel a bit frustrated just thinking about the installation of all applications I used to have and the needed updates... which is making me think that i really need to download the DVD iso. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For now thats all. Merry Christmas to all and i hope everybody enjoy this night with their family and friends</description>
